Who is Abdullahi Mustapha, the CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria?

Abdullahi Mustapha, a distinguished Nigerian energy expert, has recently taken the helm as the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN).

His appointment came on October 23, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu, entrusting him with the leadership of this government agency responsible for the strategic planning and coordination of national energy policies across all dimensions.

Boasting over a decade of expertise, Abdullahi Mustapha honed his skills within the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), where he engaged in a broad spectrum of energy and space technology projects.

His academic journey led him to achieve a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering, specializing in renewable energy, from the esteemed University of Manchester. While at Manchester, he also completed a post-doctoral fellowship as a research associate in the School of Engineering.

At the helm of the ECN, Mustapha shoulders the crucial responsibility of advancing the government’s vision to enhance the nation’s energy resources and diversify its energy portfolio. His role also encompasses overseeing the implementation of the National Energy Policy (Revised 2022) and the National Energy Masterplan (Revised 2022). These initiatives are aimed at ensuring a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy supply that drives national economic and socio-political development⁴⁵.

However, Abdullahi Mustapha’s contributions extend far beyond his administrative roles. He is a scholar and author, having published numerous papers and journals that explore diverse aspects of energy, including solar, wind, hydrogen, biomass, coal, nuclear, and shale hydrocarbon resources.

His affiliations include membership in various professional organizations like the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria, the International Solar Energy Society, and the World Renewable Energy Network⁶.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mustapha is a family man with four children. He finds enjoyment in activities like reading, traveling, and playing chess during his leisure time. His proficiency in English, Hausa, and Arabic languages reflects his diverse background and outlook
