We’ll protect schools against fire outbreaks: Oyo govt

Oyo State Government, on Wednesday, restated its commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies to curb fire outbreaks in public schools.

Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Nureni Adeniran, stated this while assessing a Grade ‘C’ Customary Court building within Omoyeni Memorial Primary School, Ode-Aje, Ibadan, which was gutted by fire on Tuesday.

Adeniran said that the board would not relent in its efforts at ensuring the protection of public schools in the state, especially during the dry season.

He also urged headteachers of public primary schools to ensure effective monitoring of classes and offices so as to guard against illegal connection of electrical appliances and other acts capable of igniting fire.

The SUBEB chairman charged them to be extra vigilant and report any activity that might pose threat to their schools.

While sympathising with the headship of the customary court over the incident, Adeniran commended the school community for their efforts at putting the fire under control.

He said that the board would ensure collaboration with Ibadan North-East Local Government, under which the customary court is, adding that the burnt building would be rehabilitated as soon as possible.

“We commend you for being proactive and for your quick intervention which prevented this fire outbreak from spreading to classes within the premises.

“The board is so grateful that there was no casualty and that the incident happened when pupils had left school.

“I enjoin you to ensure that you monitor whatever these children are doing and make sure that all appliances are put off after school hours,” he said.

The SUBEB boss emphasised the Gov. Seyi Makinde-led administration’s commitment to improving security in all public schools, maintaining that all citizens must contribute to the safety of schools in the state.  (NAN)
