We’ll collaborate with stakeholders in restoring peace in Benue – SGF

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has pledged his unwavering commitment to work alongside key stakeholders in Benue State to restore peace and put an end to the cycle of violence that has afflicted the region in recent years.

Akume made this promise on Thursday, following President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to Benue State after the recent tragic attack on the Yelwata community, where over 200 lives were reportedly lost. During his visit, President Tinubu engaged with traditional rulers, political leaders, security chiefs, and representatives from affected communities in a town hall meeting aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

Describing the President’s visit as a bold and timely intervention, Akume expressed his gratitude for Tinubu’s dedication, noting that the visit reignited hope for sustainable peace and underscored the administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people.

“The President’s courageous initiative to come here himself shows leadership and empathy. I am personally grateful, and I will follow through on his directive to form a peace committee of stakeholders,” Akume remarked.

Following President Tinubu’s instructions, a high-powered committee will be established to craft lasting solutions to the crisis. This committee will comprise former state governors, the Tor Tiv, the Och’Idoma, the SGF himself, and other crucial stakeholders, who will meet with the President in Abuja to outline a roadmap for peace.

Akume emphasized that achieving lasting peace in Benue will necessitate collaboration among the government, traditional institutions, civil society, and grassroots communities. “Restoring peace is not the job of government alone. It requires honest conversations, reconciliation, and a sincere commitment from all parties involved,” he stated.

The SGF assured that the peace initiative would align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, focusing on rebuilding trust, promoting justice, and fostering unity among all communities in the state.

Earlier, President Tinubu condemned the ongoing violence in Benue and called for collective responsibility in addressing the issue, urging local leaders to promote reconciliation rather than incite further discord.

The newly proposed committee is scheduled to commence consultations immediately and is expected to submit a framework for action in the coming weeks.
