We will come back stronger’ Mendy says after Senegal’s exit from World Cup

Senegal and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has credited England for playing well after their round of 16 loss to the Three Lions on Sunday’s night.

While noting that there’s still more to come from his team, he revelled in the achievement of winning AFCON earlier in the year and picked some positive out of the loss.

Senegal bowed to a more strong and mobile Gareth Southgate’s team on Sunday losing 3-0 to the former world champions.

“We have young players and we are still learning and we will come back stronger in 2026. I think the team is still improving. We have shown it all year,” said the Chelsea man.

“During the year we played a lot of tough games. And we won the first Afcon in the history of the country.”

Mendy also noted the World Cup play-off win over Egypt in the new Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio as another sign of progress for his team.

“We have a lot of things to be to be proud of,” the 30-year-old added.

“But we faced a top team [in England] who played at their highest level. We are disappointed but full credit to them. I wish them all the best.”

Senegal and Morroco are the only two African countries that made it to the round of 16 of the World Cup. While The Teranga Lions have been sent packing, Morroco will be facing Spain on Tuesday in their round of 16 game.
