Warn your priests to stay out of politics – Governor tells Catholic Bishops

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma has called on the authorities of Catholic in Nigeria to warn their priests who treat pulpits as campaign grounds.

The Governor revealed that the church prelates should make use of the conference opportunity to establish the neutrality of the church.

The Governor made this revelation on Sunday while speaking at the opening ceremony of the second plenary of the 2022 Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria which took place in Orlu, Imo State.

The Governor has considered it a wrong for some clergy members to portray pulpit as campaign fields for their preferred candidates or parties.

“I wholly understand that priests have the right and duty to hold our leaders and governments accountable, and nobody will ever stop a priest from condemning the ills in the society, including bad governance and corruption.

“It is important that you reaffirm the church’s neutrality on political matters and, thereafter, caution the priests not to dabble into partisan politics,” he said.

He also further revealed that the church would lose its moral authority to pontificate if it continues to involve itself in partisan politics.
