Varsity lecturer dismissed over sexual harassment allegations
The governing council of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi State has taken decisive action by dismissing Usman Aliyu, a PhD lecturer, following a guilty verdict for sexual harassment against a married postgraduate student. Zailani Bappa, the university’s public relations director, confirmed the dismissal during an interview with NAN on Thursday.
The decision was made during the 96th regular meeting of the governing council, which took place on April 11, 2025. According to Bappa, the senior staff disciplinary committee conducted a thorough investigation before confirming Aliyu’s guilt in the matter involving a student from the chemical engineering department.
Bappa stated, “Yes, it’s true, and that was because the lecturer was confirmed guilty of the offense by the senior staff disciplinary committee of the institution.” He noted that the dismissal was executed in alignment with the university’s Senior Staff Conditions of Service.
In light of the situation, the university has directed Aliyu to return all institutional property in his possession to his head of department and to submit his identification card to the chief security officer of the university, effective immediately.
