Unilorin zooms into semi finals of High Institutions Football League
The University of Ilorin Male football team have qualified for the semi finals of the High Institution Football League (HiFL).
Also known as Unilorin Warriors, the Coach Baba Isiaka Gambari led side defeated their counterparts from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi 5-4 on penalties in one of the semi finals played on Thursday.
Adams Josiah, the Unilorin Goalkeeper who was recalled in to the starting line up after missing the last game was in superb form from the start of the match as he saw off many attempts from the
ATBU boys who dominated the proceedings in the first half.
The Goalkeeper was called into two early saves as ATBU dominated the opening exchanges with the first seeing him turning Kenneth James effort around the post, before stretching to send Olu Kingsley free kick over the crossbar with his fingertips.
Muritala Abdullateef in his debut s for Warriors had the best of chance for the team in the first half when he thrusted forward to beat his marker but couldn’t find the perfect touch as he was closed down by the defender.
While ATBU had moments to win the match and posed more threats in the final minutes of the game,the ‘Warriors’ showed more compactness and resilience in the backline to ward off the goal onslaught of their opponents.
Prince Upah of ATBU watched his long range shot coming off the goal post to the relief of Unilorin Warriors who had Adams Josiah to thank for his sensational saves as it ended in goalless in regulations time.
Josiah’s heroic performance would eventually saw him scooped the Stanbic IBTC Man of the match award.
In the first quarter final match, KSU Steelers came from behind twice to draw BUK Stallions and went on to win 4-3 on penalties shot-outs.
Unilorin Warriors will be hoping to reach yet another final of the year after thier triumph at the NUGA GAMES in Lagos this year when they take on KSU Steelers in one of the Semi Finals billed for Saturday at the FUTMinna Bosso Campus by 4:00
The Finals of the 2022 Higher Institutions Football League is scheduled to hold on 24th of September later this year.
