Tinubu sacks Egbetokun as IGP, asks Disu to takeover

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police following the removal of Kayode Egbetokun from office.

Disu, who was serving as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), takes over the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force after Egbetokun was directed to resign.

Sources indicated that the President asked Egbetokun to step down during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police by

Tinubu on June 19, 2023, with his substantive appointment later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

He assumed office at the age of 58 and was originally scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, his tenure was extended by the President in a move that generated public debate.

With Disu’s appointment, a new leadership phase begins for the Nigeria Police Force.
