Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri after Muhammadu Buhari
In a significant gesture to honor the late President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University.
The decision was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
“May we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as the Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu declared, underscoring the importance of recognizing Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria.
Tinubu delivered a heartfelt tribute to Buhari, describing him as “a good man, a decent man, an honourable man” whose legacy of discipline, patriotism, and moral integrity will remain influential for generations.
He acknowledged that while Buhari was not perfect, his steadfast commitment to serving the nation distinguished him.
Reflecting on Buhari’s character, Tinubu said, “He stood, always, ramrod straight; unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause and unafraid of the loneliness that often visits those who do what is right.”
The president also recounted their political alliance that led to Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power in 2015, highlighting Buhari’s leadership style as one marked by restraint and dignity.
In his closing remarks, Tinubu expressed admiration for Buhari’s modesty after leaving office, stating, “When his tenure ended, he returned to Daura; not to command from the shadows or to hold court, but to live as he always had.”
Buhari passed away on July 13 at the age of 82, leaving a profound impact on Nigeria’s political landscape. Tinubu concluded his tribute with a prayer for Buhari’s legacy to continue inspiring future generations to serve with courage and selflessness.
