Tinubu hails Super Eagles’ AFCON bronze triumph, says medal ‘feels like gold’
Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria on their bronze medal victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), praising the team’s resilience and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
The President’s message was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, President Tinubu commended the Super Eagles for overcoming the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco and bouncing back strongly to secure third place.
The Nigerian team defeated seven-time champions Egypt in the bronze medal match, winning via penalty shootout after regulation time, a game in which the Super Eagles were dominant.
President Tinubu noted that the players once again demonstrated the determination, persistence and “can-do spirit” that Nigerians are known for.
“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the President said.
“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.
“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
