Tinubu hails National Assembly for approving Rivers state emergency proclamation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for its patriotic and decisive approval of the State of Emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability after months of political crisis.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives—Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, principal officers, and other lawmakers—for prioritising the security and welfare of Rivers State residents over political interests.

He noted that their thorough review of security reports reinforced the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation.

“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu said.

The President reiterated that his decision, as outlined in his national address on March 18, was driven by the collapse of governance, risks to federal economic assets, and the threat of widespread violence in the state.

He described the emergency measure as necessary to protect livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.

He assured that the six-month emergency period would enable the newly appointed Sole Administrator to stabilise the state, address governance failures, and facilitate reconciliation among warring factions.

President Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the National Assembly to promote peace, economic stability, and equitable development across Nigeria.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he stated.

The President thanked Nigerians for their support and urged all stakeholders to cooperate in restoring peace and stability in Rivers State.
