Tinubu extends Customs CG’s tenure by one year

Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted a one-year extension to Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to continue as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service until August 2026. This decision extends Adeniyi’s initial tenure, which was set to expire on August 31, 2025.

The extension is part of a strategic move to ensure that Adeniyi can effectively consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives under the Tinubu administration.

According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, these initiatives include the modernization of the Customs Service, the rollout of the National Single Window Project, and addressing Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

“President Tinubu recognizes Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement read. “The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”

Adeniyi was initially appointed in October 2023, following a brief acting period after taking over from former CG Hameed Ali in June 2023.
