Tinubu declines assent to NDLEA amendment bill
Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declined assent to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Amendment Bill, 2025, which was recently approved by the National Assembly.
The proposed legislation aimed to allow the NDLEA to keep a portion of the proceeds from drug-related crimes, a shift from the existing legal framework.
This decision was delivered to the House of Representatives, as noted by Speaker Rep. Tajudeen Abbas during a Thursday plenary session.
The president articulated his concerns by referencing Section 58, Subsection 4 of the 1999 Constitution, indicating that the bill’s enactment would violate this constitutional provision.
He clarified that current law mandates that all proceeds from narcotics crimes be deposited into the Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account, stressing that any allocation of these funds to relevant agencies requires approval from the President, the Federal Executive Council, and the National Assembly.
