Tinubu and Wike

Tinubu alone can sack me, not my critics — Wike

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dismissed growing calls for his removal from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, insisting that only the president has the authority to sack him.

Wike made the statement on Sunday during the final leg of his “thank you” visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, amid renewed political tension between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In recent weeks, pressure has mounted for Wike’s removal following his open hostility toward Fubara and strong remarks suggesting that his political future would be jeopardised if the governor secures a second term.

Reacting to the criticism, Wike said his detractors have no right to dictate his fate in the cabinet, stressing that President Tinubu would remove him if he no longer finds his services useful.

“Don’t bother about people who say, ‘sack him.’ If my appointor believes I cannot offer anything again, he has the right,” Wike said.

The minister maintained that he remains proud of his performance in office, adding that the people of Rivers State and Nigerians have not been disappointed by his tenure as FCT minister.

Wike explained that his visit to Obio/Akpor was to express gratitude for the support he received, noting that appreciation is a key principle of leadership. He also reiterated that politics is driven by interests rather than sentiments.

Emphasising the political influence of Obio/Akpor, Wike said the area has historically played a decisive role in determining political leadership in Rivers State, warning that those who attack the people should not expect their votes during elections.
