Wayne Rooney is one of the former Players who are taking to football coaching. He effectively began his coaching career at Derby where he moved from his playing role at into the manager’s seat.
Earlier on Tuesday, his recent attempt to find his footing at the dug out was cut short as Birmingham City sacked him.
As a Manchester United player, Rooney etched his name in the history of the club- scoring a total number of 253 goals for United in all competitions ,thus making him the club’s top Goalscorer of all time.
He also won 16 trophies with the club and could be adjudged as one of the golden boys of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
The former England striker, had signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at St Andrew’s in October.
He got into the role at Birmingham City with a 27 per cent win rate across his first two jobs with Derby and DC United, but the overall figure has now dropped to 26 per cent.
Managerial career journey
Derby
Rooney started his managerial journey in Derby county which he joined in 2020 from DC United .
He moved from his playing role at Derby into the manager’s seat. Initially, he shared the job with Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker before he finally took charge .
At the time he took over, they were bottom of the Championship table but climbed to 18th, eight points clear of the relegation zone, before a late-season slump saw them survive by just a point.
In the following season, they relegated from the championship after a total of 21 points were deducted-12points for entering administration and nine for historical financial breaches.
Although without the deductions, they would have finished 17th on 55 points as they rallied with three successive wins in December 2021 and 10 in their final 25 games of the season
As the club’s manager however, he won 24, drew 22 and lost 39 of his 85 games, including those with the managerial group in charge, for a 28.2 per cent win rate.
DC United
At DC United, Rooney was also unable to make his mark as a head coach of the club
At the Major League Soccer his winning percentage fell to 25.9 as his side were mathematically eliminated from play-off contention in the 2023 season despite the win over New York City on October 8 that marked the end of his stay on the job.
There would later be a mutually agreed departure between Rooney and the MLS side.
At DC United, his final record in all competitions, included two games in the US Open Cup and three in the Leagues Cup, read won 14, drew 14, lost 26.
Birmingham
His recent attempt at Coach took him to Birmingham. He was appointed two days on after the sacking of John Eustace while the club occupies sixth in the Championship table.
In total, Blues registered victories in only two of Rooney’s 15 matches, with nine losses, for a win percentage of 13.3.
In total,the 38-year-old striker has an overall managerial record of 40 wins from 154 games (26 per cent), with 40 draws and 74 defeats.
