There is palpable tension on Wednesday at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital as a patient suspected of having coronavirus dies in the Accident and Emergency ward of the hospital, officials said.
The man who according to sources returned from the United States with his family and observed 13-day quarantine before he fell sick was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, April 1st and died on Thursday April 2nd.
A statement released by the PRO of the Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward, Ojuawo Ayobola disclosed that they had taken sample of the patient for examination.
The statement reads in part, “The executives are aware of a possible/ suspected case of COVID-19 that was admitted at the Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital on the 1st of April and died on the 2nd of April, 2020.
“While we await the results of the investigations aimed at establishing the diagnosis, all exposed members during the management of this patient have started self isolation and are currently being giving all the necessary support by the ARD executives and the Epidemiology department.
“We use this medium to reiterate and emphasize to members to ensure that they use the appropriate PPEs when attending to ANY patient. When and where such necessary PPEs are not available, please DON’T see such patients until the PPEs are available.”
