Taekwondo coach killed by collapsing court during rainstorm in Kwara

A devastating incident unfolded in Ilorin, Kwara state capital, as a brief but intense 30-minute rainstorm on Monday led to the tragic death of Musa Ismail, a local Taekwondo coach and champion. The accident occurred at a badminton court managed by the Lower Niger River Basin Authority, where a section of the newly renovated structure collapsed during the storm.

Eyewitnesses reported that the roof of the badminton court, completed under a previous administration, fell on Ismail, resulting in immediate tragedy. The flooding caused by the rainstorm completely destroyed the court, leaving the community in mourning.

Ismail was described as an up-and-coming and friendly coach by several of his trainees. He gained recognition for his skills and was notably crowned at the 2025 MKA Taekwondo Championship held in Ede, Osun state. Married for over a year, Ismail is survived by his young child.

Prior to the incident, Ismail had been training and playing at the facility alongside friends. Following the tragedy, inspections conducted at the agency revealed that the court had been sealed off, with the visible damage clearly apparent to passersby.

Attempts to obtain information from agency employees were met with limited response. An anonymous staff member confirmed the incident, noting that the victim was not an employee of the agency, and expressed the need to speak with the managing director, who was unavailable at the time.
