Suspended Adamawa REC on the run, evading arrest: INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) raised concerns on Tuesday as its suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari, along with his surety, are reportedly on the run, avoiding arrest.
The prosecution informed the Adamawa High Court about the ongoing developments.
INEC had brought Barr. Hudu Ari to court, filing a 6-count charge against him related to false electoral result announcement, violations of the oath of neutrality, breach of duty, disorderly conduct at elections, incitement of disturbances, and impersonation of a public servant.
During the hearing, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, who represented INEC, informed the court that the defendant had declined an invitation from the investigative police officer (IPO) after being served with a hearing notice. Due to these developments, Jacobs requested an adjournment to allow the police to arrest the defendant for subsequent arraignment and trial, or to issue a warrant of arrest if necessary.
The IPO, identified as CSP Moses Jolujdo, confirmed that both the defendant and his surety were evading arrest.
Presiding Judge Benjamin Manji Lawan granted the application, adjourning the case to November 22, 2023, for the expected arraignment.
Speaking to the press, INEC’s counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, expressed concerns over the defendant’s evasive actions. He urged the police to arrest him promptly and intensify their efforts toward his prosecution.
