Super Falcons crash out of World cup after losing 4-2 on penalties to England
It’s the end of the road for the Super Falcons of Nigeria as they crashed out of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup after their 4-2 loss on penalties to England in the round of 16 match on Monday.
It was a tough-soaked game between the nine time African champions and the European champions in Brisbane as they treated their fans to a great display of football.
While both teams failed to turn in some breathtaking chances in the regulation and extra time, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review was on hand on several occasions to define some moments in the game.
While VAR ruled out a penalty appeal from England due to Ajibade’s challenge on Daly within the box, the 120 minute affair of an intense football action also saw England’s taliswoman, Lauren James sent off in the 87th minute for a rash tackle on Alozie after a VAR review.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Super Falcons failed to exploit the situation even as the match stretched on to the extra time.
Both sides missed their first penalties from Georgia Stanway and Desire Oparanozie. And Alozie’s failure to hit the right spot for Super Falcons in their second ultimately handed Sarina Wiegman side the advantage to seal a 4-2 win.
England will next face the winner of the Round of 16 game between Colombia and Jamaica in the quarter-final.
