Sudan War: Reps ready to meet foreign affairs minister, NEMA, NiDCOM over safety of Nigerians
The Nigeria’s House of Representatives has declared its readiness to meet the minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyema; the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in order to have knowledge of the condition of stranded Nigerians who are fleeing the war torn zone — Sudan.
This was made known by the Speaker of the lower chamber of the national assembly, Femi Gbajabiamila while addressing lawmakers at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday May 2nd.
He said, “Over the last few weeks, the Republic of Sudan has descended into war. Unfortunately, this rapid descent into the carnage of violent conflict has entrapped many Nigerians resident in that country.
“Efforts are underway to ensure that our citizens resident in the Republic of Sudan, as students, business people and in other vocations, are evacuated quickly and safely.
“I have requested the chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs to invite the honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to appear before the House to give an account of the status of evacuation efforts.
“The House is aware of ongoing difficulties with the evacuation efforts and the federal government’s response to the developments in the Republic of Sudan”.
The Informant247 earlier reported that the chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that the Egyptian border has finally been opened for stranded Nigerian students to be evacuated from Sudan.
According to Dabiri-Erewa, the development came following a dialogue between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The popular Nigerian airline, Air Peace is also on ground to complement the effort of the federal government.
A source revealed that: “The plane landed a few hours ago at Aswan. The first set of evacuees will depart today.”
Dabiri-Erewa said the Egyptian authority had opened the border with certain conditions.
The commission did not make open details of the required conditions.
“The border has just been opened, ( with stringent conditions ) after President Buhari’s intervention with the Egyptian President. So, the processing of evacuees by the Nigerian Embassy in Egypt will begin,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
The Informant247 earlier reported that the Nigerian government had vowed to evacuate its stranded citizens from the war torn zone.
