Sokoto, Zamfara govt schools refuse to register students for May 16 WASSCE
Government schools in Sokoto and Zamfara states have not officially submitted names of any candidate for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which was scheduled for May 16 to June 23.
Mr. Patrick Areghan who’s the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), made this revelation on Monday while speaking to newsmen on the preparations and readiness of the examination body to conduct smooth examination in Nigeria.
He said that private schools in the affected states have submitted names of and registered their candidates for the examination, saying “the reason why candidates from public schools were not registered remains unknown.”
He expressed displeasure at the manner schools registered their candidates late, particularly private schools, condemning it as a totally unacceptable act, as it delays the conduct of the examination.
Areghan said even though National Identification Number, NIN, was a criterion for the registration, it was still not a compulsory requirement, so as not to disqualify many candidates from participating in the examination.
He however noted that no candidate was disallowed to register as a result of non presentation of NIN.
