Sobi specialist to become teaching hospital as Kwara govt, Al-Hikmah varsity sign landmark MoU

The Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB) and Al-Hikmah University have finalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a University Teaching Hospital at Specialist Hospital, Sobi, Ilorin, in a landmark move to strengthen clinical training for medical students in Kwara State.

The Executive Secretary of KW-HMB, Dr Abdulraheem Malik, disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection of the proposed site for the Al-Hikmah University Teaching Hospital at Specialist Hospital Sobi.

Dr Malik commended the Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Al-Hikmah University, Alhaji Chief (Dr) Abdul-Raheem Oladimeji, OFR, for what he described as a bold and visionary initiative that would significantly boost the state’s healthcare delivery system.

He noted that the partnership would be mutually beneficial, enhancing medical education while improving service delivery at the state-owned facility.

“This initiative goes beyond building capacity for future medical professionals. It reflects remarkable leadership and a deep commitment to the welfare of the people of Kwara State,” Malik said.

The Executive Secretary encouraged other well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture by supporting government efforts aimed at repositioning the health sector.

He further assured the university of the Kwara State Government’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the smooth take-off and operation of the teaching hospital.

In his remarks, the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al-Hikmah University, Alhaji Chief (Dr) Abdul-Raheem Oladimeji, expressed appreciation to the state government for granting the institution the opportunity to train its medical students at the government facility.

The Jagunmolu of Igbajaland pledged that the university would strictly adhere to all conditions required to ensure the proposed teaching hospital meets global standards, consistent with the institution’s international recognition.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Lateef F. Oladimeji, described the development as a giant stride in advancing medical education at the university.

He assured that both staff and students would maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism, while the university would provide the necessary infrastructure to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

The MoU marks a significant milestone in public-private collaboration in Kwara State’s health sector, with expectations that the new teaching hospital will not only enhance medical training but also expand access to quality healthcare services for residents.
