Sharia court sentences man to life imprisonment over murder of two in Bauchi

A Sharia Court sitting in Katagum, Bauchi State, has sentenced Ibrahim Umar, popularly known as Maidada, to life imprisonment for the killing of two men whose bodies he buried in a forest grave.

The court found Umar guilty of murdering Kabiru Idi and Muhammad Bello in Taranka Forest, where he reportedly dug a grave and buried the victims after killing them.

Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Muhammad Ali, told the court that the defendant admitted to the crime from the beginning of the trial and willingly accepted the judgment of the court.

Speaking to journalists after the ruling, defence counsel, Barrister Ibrahim Umar Abdullahi, said the court showed mercy by sparing his client the death penalty. He explained that the defence appealed for leniency based on Umar’s guilty plea, which led the court to impose life imprisonment instead of death by hanging.

The verdict brings closure to a case that shocked residents of the area and highlights the court’s balance between justice and mercy under Sharia law.
