Senate seeks FG’s intervention to address high cost of data, calls by telecom operators

The Senate has called on the federal ministry of telecommunications and digital economy to engage with telecom operators to address the recent spike in data costs and other services.

This decision follows a motion introduced by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC, Cross River South) during a plenary session.

Telecommunications companies have raised the prices of data and voice services in light of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approving a 50% tariff hike, which took effect on February 11, 2025. As reported by Daily Trust, Nigerians have been struggling with escalating data prices since then, raising significant concerns, particularly among small business owners reliant on affordable internet for their operations.

In presenting his motion, Senator Ekpenyong emphasized that the soaring costs affect not only everyday consumers but also threaten the livelihoods of entrepreneurs in sectors dependent on digital connectivity. He stressed the need for telecommunications services to be affordable in order to support the well-being of young Nigerians.

Senator Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central) contributed to the discussion by describing the motion as timely and lamenting additional increases in electricity tariffs and DSTV subscriptions. He declared that urgent action is required to regulate these price hikes, as citizens currently lack a means of redress.

Senator Sadiiq Sulaiman Umar (APC, Kwara North) echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of addressing what he described as a social crisis.

In its resolutions, the Senate urged the federal government to foster a conducive business environment and tackle the numerous challenges faced by businesses in the country. Additionally, the Senate suggested establishing free internet hubs for young people to improve their socio-economic circumstances.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, stated that the implementation of these resolutions would greatly aid young entrepreneurs who utilize the internet for various business ventures.
