Senate forms committee to oversee emergency rule in Rivers
In a decisive move, the Senate has set up a committee to oversee the implementation of emergency rule in Rivers State following the suspension of the democratic government. This action follows President Bola Tinubu’s announcement on March 18, 2025, declaring a state of emergency and appointing Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd) as the Sole Administrator for a period of six months.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while announcing the committee, underscored its necessity, likening it to a similar initiative undertaken by the House of Representatives.
The newly formed committee consists of at least 18 members who will be responsible for monitoring the activities of the Sole Administrator and ensuring the effective governance of Rivers State during this emergency period.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele from Ekiti Central (APC) has been appointed as the chairman, with Senator Rufai Hanga from Kano Central (NNPP) serving as the deputy chairman. The committee includes notable members such as Senators Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi Central), Osita Izunaso (APC, Imo West), and Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT).
The Clerk/Secretary of the committee will be Mr. Charles Bala. In his remarks, Senator Akpabio urged the committee to begin its oversight duties promptly, stating, “If there is need to review, it will be after further consultation with our colleagues. But in the meantime, they have to get to work immediately.”
