The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara State says it has arrested seven suspects in connection with robbery of one Olusegun Taiwo during a recent protest in Ilorin.

According to NSCDC spokesman Ayoola Michael, the suspects targeted Taiwo while she was on her way to work during a protest by commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders in Ilorin.

The riders were protesting a recent increase in fuel prices. The suspects forcibly took Taiwo’s bag, phone, and other valuables, according to the spox.

He said, “She was attacked by a group of youths who stole her bag, phone, and other items.”

He added that the suspects are believed to be part of a larger group causing unrest in Ilorin, particularly in the Sango area of the state capital.

Background

Commercial transport operators on Thursday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, grounded daily activities to express their dissatisfaction over the new fuel price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The Informant247 gathered that the protest, which started around 8 a.m., left many residents stranded and spiked transportation costs by over 100 per cent.

The aggrieved transporters forced other intra-city commercial operators off the road and occupied major junctions in the state capital.

Places like Okolowo, Ogidi, Oloje, Alore, Oja-Oba, Maraba, Taiwo Isale, Unity Road, Olorunshogo, GSS and Offa garage roundabout, among others, were witnessed by what could be termed as an unannounced protest.
