Safety: House of Representatives backs Shagaya’s motion to investigate Genetically Modified Crops
Honourable Muktar Tolani Shagaya, representing Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, has initiated a significant motion in the House of Representatives, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the introduction of Genetically Modified Crops (GMOs) in Nigeria.
The motion, addressing safety concerns, regulatory oversight, and potential impacts on Nigeria’s biosafety and ecosystem, received strong support from fellow representatives.
Shagaya emphasized the House’s duty to protect public interests, urging the Federal Government to suspend new GMO introductions until the Committee on Agricultural Production and Services completes its investigation and reports its findings to the public.
The House endorsed the motion, referring it to the House Committee on Agricultural Production and Services and NASENI for detailed scrutiny. The investigation will examine the role of the National Biosafety Management Agency in the introduction of genetically modified crops in Nigeria, with the Committee expected to report back within four weeks.
