Rice intended for fuel subsidy palliative carted away by hoodlums in Kwara
Hoodlums have hijacked trucks loaded with 10kg bags of rice intended for delivery to communities as part of palliative measures to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. along the Oja-Oba/Idi-Ape/Isale-Oja route in Ilorin, encompassing East and West local government areas.
Three fully loaded Toyota Dynas carrying rice drew the attention of onlookers, who subsequently attacked and emptied the trucks.
This occurrence resulted in a brawl, escalating tensions among local residents and traders in the vicinity.
Although the Nigeria Police later arrived at the scene, they questioned individuals but made no immediate arrests.
In response to the fuel subsidy removal, the state government received N2 billion out of the N5 billion allocated by the federal government. This funding was designated for the purchase and distribution of rice to vulnerable citizens.
A committee chaired by the retired Commissioner of Police, Ebunoluwarotimi Adelesi, and other prominent figures was established to oversee this endeavor.
The committee initiated the distribution of 10kg bags of rice, commencing with a phase held at the open field of St. Anthony Secondary School, Offa Road, Ilorin, where 250,000 bags were disbursed to residents from various associations.
The committee plans to continue the distribution to remaining areas and communities across the state.
