Respected, Powerful People In Zamfara Behind Killings, Banditry –Governor Matawalle

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle has expressed concern about how bandits are gradually returning to Zamfara, alleging that big and respected politicians are sponsors of the terrorists.

He also alleged that some residents of the state allowed themselves to be used by bandits, as informants.

The governor questioned some powerful politicians in the state who declined to use the Quran to swear, they have no hand in the reviving security tension.

Recall that the state has recorded series of attacks, in the past months, by suspected bandits.

Bandits again on Tuesday kidnapped five female students of the College of Health Science and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State, where one of them escaped from the abductors.

Zailani Bappa, a media aide to the governor, via a statement condemned the gradual resuscitation of bandits and kidnappers in the state.

“Strong facts indicate that the recurrence of banditry in the state is aided and abetted mostly by powerful indigenes. Some of these people are strong personalities who the people respect.

“There are also, among the generality of the people who receive paltry sums of money to serve as informants to bandits,” Bappa quoted the governor as saying.

He added that it was based on suspicion that the governor directed those taking political appointments to swear by the Quran while taking the oath of office, NAN reports.

He reminded that some big political persons in the state, however, declined to use the Quran.

The Governor also affirmed that using the Quran to swear is the only way to get people out of kidnapping and banditry.

The Governor narrated that his government with the security forces had been able to diminish kidnapping and banditry, amidst numerous challenges.

He then gave an assurance that the security forces had devised new means to contain the trend.

“They want people to revolt against the state and the federal government. They will not succeed. Success is ours by the grace of God, the Almighty,” Matawalle was also quoted as saying.

According to the Zamfara state government, about 700 kidnapped persons, mostly women and children, have been rescued by troops.
