The House of Representatives on Thursday asked the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 2024 registration by two weeks to enable potential candidates to register, while also mandating the relevant Committee on Education and Legislative compliance to enforce strict compliance

The Informant247 reports that the JAMB had announced the closure of UTME registration for 2024 with effect from February 26, 2024.

The resolution of the House followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance by Rep Bello Hassan Shinkafi.

Moving his motion, Shinkafi said as a result of “the painful economic situation prevailing in the country, many families have been constrained from registering their wards by the February 26 deadline for registration set by JAMB.

Shinkafi said without an extension of the registration; many candidates will not be able to register and participate in the exercise, which means there will not be a wider coverage and participation in this year’s UTME in Nigeria, adding that JAMB’s quick response to the call for the extension of time by two weeks will encourage parents of these candidates to register their children.

However, the motion was unanimously adopted when it was put to voice vote by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
