Reps distribute over 3,000 football kits to improve grassroot sports

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, announced that more than 3,000 community-based football clubs across Nigeria will benefit from a new grassroots sports development initiative by the National Assembly.

This initiative includes the distribution of football kits and jerseys aimed at empowering local clubs.

During a flag-off ceremony at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, Amadu shared that a total of 3,260 local clubs will receive support, with each state expected to get between 80 and 120 sets of football kits, facilitated through House Committee members and leadership.

“This is more than just equipment distribution; it is an investment in our youth, in discipline, and in building stronger, healthier communities,” Amadu stated. “These kits are symbols of opportunity, empowerment, and national progress.”

He emphasized the initiative’s goal to create a sustainable sports ecosystem that nurtures talent and character from the grassroots level. “For too long, our attention has been on elite athletes; we’re changing that narrative starting today,” he added.

Additionally, the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, announced plans to establish a National Sports Academy. This academy will provide full facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports, and will cater to secondary school-aged children identified through grassroots competitions, allowing them to receive professional training while continuing their education.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), underscored the necessity of transitioning Nigeria’s focus from competition-driven sports to development-oriented frameworks. He revealed that a comprehensive sports reform bill is being prepared and will soon be presented to the House of Representatives.
