Renewed Clashes in Plateau Claim 13 Lives in Farmers-Herders Conflict

At least 13 people have lost their lives in the ongoing crisis between farming communities and herders in Barikin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. The violent clashes and retaliatory attacks persist as tensions escalate.

The most recent incident unfolded shortly after five herders fell victim to an ambush in Rawuru community, Barikin Ladi. Gunmen, reportedly, invaded the same community hours later, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight individuals.

Confirming the second attack, DSP Alabo Alfred, spokesperson for the state police command, stated that he was unaware of the killing of the herders. He also mentioned that the exact number of casualties from the night attack is yet to be determined.

DSP Alfred said, “While I am not informed about the killing of the herders, there was an assault on Rawuru community where lives were lost and houses were set ablaze. Our officers are present at the location, and we await a comprehensive report.”

In contrast, Nuru Abdullahi, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), informed Daily Trust that on Friday, five herders were waylaid on their way back from a cattle market in Bukuru town, Jos South LGA of the state. They had attended the market to sell their livestock.

Abdullahi stated, “The police commissioner, the Department of State Services (DSS), and Operation Safe Haven are all aware of the situation. All security agencies are cognizant of these incidents.”

The ongoing conflicts between farming communities and herders have given rise to a disturbing cycle of attacks and counterattacks in the state. Both sides have accused each other of being responsible for the atrocities committed.

In May, numerous lives were lost in Mangu LGA when suspected herders launched assaults on villages in the area.
