Qatar 2022: Koulibaly the hero as Senegal beat Ecuador to pick round of 16 ticket
The Teranga Lions of Senegal has qualified for the knockout stage of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Senegal defeated Ecuador 2-1 on Tuesday to join the likes of Brazil, Portugal and France and Netherlands amongst others in the next round of the tournament.
Aliou Cisse’s side drew the first blood in the game when Ismaila Sarr converted a penalty to give the AFCON Champions a lead in the 44th minutes.
While Moises Caicedo levelled for Ecuador midway through the second half, Koulibaly popped up in the 70th minute to restore Senegal’s lead and send them into the last 16.
Netherlands also defeated Qatar 2-0 in another Group A encounter to finish a top the group with Seven points.
Senegal, after finishing with six points will face the winner of Group B on Sunday, which is likely to be England but could yet be Iran, USA or Wales depending on the results.
The last time Senegal reached the round of 16 of the mundial was in 2022 at the Korea/Japan World Cup.
