The Kwara State Police Command has arrested six (6) ‘Sunset’ teachers among other protesters demanding the credibility of their disengagement from service without any substantiated evidences to hold on to.
Sunset teachers are the 2,414 SUBEB teachers employed in 2019 towards the end of the tenure of Abdulfatai Ahmed, the former Kwara state governor, but whom were later sacked after approving the payment of their seven months salary arrears by the incumbent Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
But, in contrary, the Commissioner for Police, Muhammed Lawal Bagega said the violators were arrested for flouting the COVID-19 protocols as directed by the Federal and the State Government respectfully.
Meanwhile, other reports claim that not less than 9 of the sunset workers were arrested.
This was disclosed in a statement by Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Okasanmi Ajayi (anipr) in Ilorin, the state capital.
The following individuals of five (5) males and a female were involved: Aransiola Olubukun ‘f’, Salaudeen Abubakar’m’, Mohammed Soliu ‘m’, Ibahim Alabi ‘m’, Isiaka Toyin ‘m’, Adewale Abdulazeez ‘m’.
The statement read: This offence was committed in the process of an alleged protest by a group called the ‘Sunset’ teachers in ilorin metropolis.
“Not only did they run foul of the Covid 19 guidelines, they also in their multitude blocked the popular Ahmadu Bello way Ilorin, thereby preventing lawful users of the road of their rights of passage by disturbing the public peace which is in contravention of Section 113 of the penal code, the statement added.
The Command recalled that the purported protest has been ongoing for almost a week without any interference from security agencies.
The Command noted that while it is the right of every citizen to protest peacefully, it should be also known that where ones right ends another one starts, therefore, the command will not folds her arms while some people in the guise of exercising their supposed rights compromise the peace in the State.
Mohammed, however, assured law abiding citizens of their safety at all times while would be law breakers are warned to desist or face the full weight of the law, please.
