President Tinubu confers OON on journalism icon Dapo Olorunyomi
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on Dapo Olorunyomi, the publisher of Nigeria’s foremost investigative news organization, PREMIUM TIMES.
Mr. Tinubu announced this on Thursday while addressing the joint session of the National Assembly at the House of Representatives chambers in Abuja.
Olorunyomi was honoured alongside other heroes of democracy on Thursday as Nigeria marks this year’s ‘June 12’ Democracy Day, including the Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, who was honoured with the second-highest honour in the land, GCON.
Mr. Olorunyomi, a veteran journalist, was one of those who used journalistic tools and platforms to demand Nigeria’s return to democracy during the Sani Abacha dictatorship.
He was, during the course of the struggle for democracy, attacked by security agencies and arrested alongside his wife, Ladi. He and the family had to seek exile abroad.
Olorunyomi is one of the internationally recognised Nigerian journalists with notable awards and recognition to his name.
