Popular Maracana Stadium in Ajegunle Overhauled, Gets Modern Facilities Boost

A new life has been breathed into the life of the popular Ajegunle Maracana Sports complex in Lagos State with new and modern facilities now dotting and donning the formerly known slum space.

The major renovation and refurbishing project which was facilitated and championed by Nathaniel Idowu Foundation in conjunction with Ajeromi/Ifelodun local government area of Lagos State is geared toward giving a facelift to all the facilities as a way of enhancing sports and athletes development.

Upon completion, the Maracana Sports complex will boast of 10 five-a-side pitches, Eight seven-a-side pitches, one international size pitch, 50-metre Olympic size swimming pool, one diving pool, a table tennis hall, basketball courts, tennis courts, gym for boxing and mixed martial gym, medical centre as well as an office complex.

Reacting to the development, NFF 1st Vice President who also doubles as the Lagos State Football Association Chairman, Seyi Akinwunmi described the gesture by the Nathaniel Idowu foundation as a commendable one while hoping that it would help to unearth more talents for Lagos.

He said, “Indeed it is a fantastic initiative. The sheer number of children playing football on various pitches simultaneously was a delight to witness.”

The popular Maracana Stadium among many other great football Stars produced the likes of Odion Ighalo,Obafemi Martins, Former Super Eagles‘ Coaches; Samson Siasia, Emmanuel Amuneke and Current Golden Eaglets Coach; Nduka Ugbade.
