Police remand 20-year-old student over alleged possession of gun in Osun

A 20-year-old secondary school student,  Babatunde Olayera, was on Thursday remanded at police station over alleged possession of a gun.

He was remanded on the order of an Osun Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Babatunde Olayera, wad brought before the court to defend a trip count charge of illegal possession of gun and conspiracy.

O. B. Adediwura, who presided over the matter rejected the plea of Olayera on count two, over lack of jurisdiction.

The Magistrate ordered that the case file be transfered to the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) for necessary legal input and advice.

She, has therefore, directed that the remand of the suspect at “A” Division Police Station, in Moore, Ile-Ife, till legal advice.

The Magistrate has adjourned the matter until December 15, for mention.

Insp Adesina Elijah, the police prosecutor, earlier, had informed the court that Olayera and others carried out the offence on November 7 at 12:00 a.m in Lagere Area, Ile-Ife.

Elijah revealed that the suspect has conspired with others to carry out the unlawful possession of firearm.

He said that the suspect was unlawfully caught with one locally-made single barrel gun.

The prosecutor also added that the offences were in contravention of Section 4 and Sections 27(i)(b)(i) of the Firearms Act Cap F.28, Laws of Federation, 2004 and 516 of the Criminal Laws of Osun State, 2002.
