Police deny operation of new terror group ‘Mahmuda’ in Kwara
The Kwara State Police Command has refuted claims regarding the existence of a new terror group named ‘Mahmuda’ operating in the state, while describing the reports as unfounded and inciting.
In a statement released on Saturday by the command’s, spokesperson Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, clarified that recent publications alleging the group’s presence in the Kaiama and Baruten local government areas are misleading.
She said, “The Kwara State Police Command categorically refutes the recent publication alleging the emergence of a terror group named Mahmuda within Kaiama and Baruten local government areas of Kwara State.”
She elaborated that comprehensive threat assessments, intelligence surveillance, and tactical reconnaissance in these regions have uncovered no evidence of insurgent activities, coordinated terrorist formations, or any mass casualty incidents as suggested in the reports.
Additionally, claims about the reported killing of 15 vigilantes were termed completely false and lacking factual support.
The Command reassured the public of its commitment to security, stating that all personnel remain proactive in their duties, operating under a multi-agency framework involving the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
“No breach of internal security has been reported or observed in the areas mentioned. Our community engagement structures, including vigilante commanders and district heads, have not indicated any such incidents, reaffirming the misleading nature of the publication,” the statement added.
While acknowledging the potential challenges posed by cross-border movements around the Kainji Lake National Park, the Kwara State Police Command emphasized effective situational control across all border communities.
The police urged media outlets and the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could lead to unnecessary panic. Under the leadership of CP Adekimi Ojo, the Kwara State Police Command remains dedicated to safeguarding lives and property and encourages citizens to report any suspicious activities through official channels for an immediate response.
