Police confirm killing of six in Ilesha Baruba as insecurity heightens up in Kwara

No fewer than six persons have been killed in Baruten and Kaiama local government areas of Kwara State following a deadly attacks by gunmen, suspected to be bandits, the State Police Command has confirmed.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the first incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Sunday, April 21, when suspected armed assailants stormed the Ilesha Baruba Motor Park and opened fire on civilians at a nearby relaxation spot. Six persons—identified as Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, Mohammed Nasamu, and three others—were killed in the attack, while two others sustained serious injuries.

The deceased have been taken to the Ilesha Baruba Morgue for autopsy, and the injured are receiving treatment. Police authorities say investigations are underway, and security measures have been heightened in the area to prevent further violence.

Earlier that same day, around 11:30 AM, a separate incident unfolded in the Kemanji axis of Kaiama LGA. A team of local vigilantes on routine patrol within the Kainji National Park engaged in a gun duel with suspected bandits. Three of the suspected bandits were reportedly neutralized, while one vigilante member, Yusuf Samba, died after sustaining gunshot injuries.

Following these incidents, the police have launched of full-scale security operations across affected regions, resulting in the arrest of a key informant suspected of aiding a bandit network. The suspect, currently in custody, is said to be cooperating with investigators and has provided vital information to aid ongoing tactical operations.

The Command reassured residents of both communities that intelligence-led efforts, including the deployment of tactical squads and increased surveillance, are actively underway to restore normalcy and bring all perpetrators to justice.

“The Command is committed to protecting lives and property. Anyone found aiding or abetting criminals will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement read.

Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as the state ramps up efforts to curb rising insecurity in the region.
