Police begin disciplinary action against six officers involved in ₦5,000 or fuel scandal

The Nigeria Police Force has launched disciplinary proceedings against six officers involved in a viral extortion incident along the Benin bypass, where motorists were allegedly forced to pay ₦5,000 or provide fuel in order to pass.

In response to the public outcry following the release of the video, the Force has reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for extortion and misconduct.

Among those called to the Force Headquarters in Abuja was a Chief Superintendent of Police who acted as the supervising officer for the implicated officers. Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, described the officers’ actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable,” directing the immediate initiation of disciplinary procedures.

All six officers have received formal queries, and orderly room trials have begun for the inspectors directly involved in the extortion captured on video.

This swift action underscores the Police Force’s dedication to maintaining professionalism, integrity, and accountability, while assuring that such misconduct will not be tolerated and that appropriate sanctions will be enforced in accordance with established disciplinary processes.

However, the Force has urged citizens to report any unethical behavior, promising that all complaints will be handled with seriousness and transparency.
