Police ASP kills self in Niger

A mobile police officer attached to 61 police mobile force, Shafi’u Bawa, has reportedly committed suicide in Kontagora, Niger state.

Bawa, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), was “found hanging from the ceiling of his room” on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, the officer’s father, Usman Bawa, raised the alarm after finding his son’s lifeless body and reported the incident to the Kontagora police division.

Confirming the incident, Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger state police command, said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

“On 8/2/2025 at about 2 p.m., it was reported that one ASP Shafiu Bawah of 61 PMF Kontagora committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling due to a yet-to-be ascertained reason,” he said.

Abiodun added that the remains of the deceased have been released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
