Peter Obi labels fuel subsidy as organized crime
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has strongly criticized fuel subsidy, referring to it as an organized crime.
He made these remarks during an appearance on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ while discussing his approach to resolving the impending strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.
Obi stated, “Fuel subsidy is organized crime. I have consistently advocated for its removal. My approach would have been to eliminate the corruption and criminal aspects of it and reduce excess demand.”
According to Obi, this approach could have reduced the subsidy burden by 50 percent. He further explained that the remaining 50 percent could have been addressed through organized consultations with various stakeholders, focusing on investing the gains from subsidy removal in critical development areas.
The former governor of Anambra State expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future despite the challenges.
