PDP southern leaders reject Lagos zoning meeting as party crisis deepens

Key southern leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have distanced themselves from a meeting set to take place on Thursday in Lagos, which is intended to focus on zoning issues within the party.

In a press briefing held in Abuja, Kingsley Chinda, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, articulated concerns over the organization of the meeting.

He noted that a unanimous resolution was reached among several significant southern party leaders—including state chairmen from Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States, along with former governors and National Assembly members—voicing their discontent with their exclusion.

Chinda remarked, “It is highly regrettable and indeed deeply disturbing that such a meeting was convened without the courtesy of inviting several State Chairmen from the South East and South South.”

He expressed worry about the implications this could have on the party, adding, “Even more troubling is the inexplicable exclusion of several national officers, eminent leaders, and critical stakeholders of the PDP.”

Highlighting the serious nature of the impending decisions on zoning and political equity, he stated, “Shockingly, the Minority Leader in the National Assembly and other principal officers of our party from the South-South and South-East were also deliberately sidelined.”

Chinda cautioned that if the outcomes of the meeting are recognized without proper representation, actions will be taken: “We shall not hesitate to take appropriate steps in line with our party constitution to resist the same with full force.” He stressed the need for unity and inclusivity to avert further discord within the PDP.
