Over 79,000 insurgents have surrendered, Nigerian army says
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (The Informant247) – Over 79,000 insurgents, comprising combatants and non-combatants, from different terrorist groups in northeast Nigeria have so far surrendered, the Nigerian armed forces said, attributing the development to the military’s counter-insurgency efforts.
This onslaught has led to the need to have additional camps in Maiduguri to host the repentants, the Theatre Commander, North East “Operation Hadin Kai”, Maj.-Gen. Christopher Musa, told reporters.
He lauded the support from the public, which he described as “unsung heroes” and urged them to sustain the tempo for a speedy end to the conflict.
“We are really happy with the way the members of the public were cooperating with us; they see the sincerity in what we are doing.
“We are committed to the human rights charter and the rules of engagement in our operations,” Musa said.
Insurgency in the northeast – that has festered for more than a decade – and rising kidnappings for ransom by armed gangs mainly in the northcentral are some of the security threats that Nigeria is grappling with.
