Over 100 killed by terrorists in Kwara community attack
…..…Gov. condemns attack, PDP says governor’s statement is ‘hopeless’
Over 100 persons have reportedly been killed on Tuesday when terrorists invaded Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State in North Central Nigeria.
The attack, according to locals, occurred around 6:00 pm when the armed men, said to be numbering about 200, stormed the village, shooting sporadically.
The attack is regarded as one of the deadliest assault recorded this year in Kwara State which has been ravaged by banditry, kidnapping amid other insecurity challenges.
The actual number of victims can’t be confirmed as at the time of filling this report, but Hon. Ahmed Saidu Baba, the Gwanabe/Gweria/Bani/Adena constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly told Reuters that at least 170 people were killed during the attack.
A local journalist, who identified himself as Kaiama TV told Informant247 that “the actual number of victims is yet to be confirmed because search is still going on” even as he added that “We personally recorded 162 around 12pm today”.
Meanwhile Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has condemned the attack.
The governor, in a statement by his spokesperson, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the attack “is a cowardly expression of frustration by terrorist cells following the ongoing counterterrorism campaigns in parts of the state and the successes so far recorded.
“The attack was apparently to distract the security forces who have successfully hunted down several terrorist and kidnapping gangs across many parts of the state”.
However, the Peoples Democractic Party(PDP) described the attack as a despicable, inhuman and callous act of wickedness.
While noting that the incident is yet another reminder that State requires far more than propaganda, it described the statement from the governor “as merely cosmetic and completely lacking in hope or concrete reassurance for the wounded victims and the devastated community”.
The opposition party urged the state government to “immediately deploy humanitarian aid, relief materials and medical support to the affected communities, and called on the insecurity agencies to intensify efforts to track down these criminal elements and ensure they are brought to book.
