Osimhen inspires Super Eagles to 2–0 win over Algeria, sets up AFCON semi-final clash with Morocco
Victor Osimhen delivered a commanding performance as Nigeria defeated Algeria 2–0 to book a place in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals.
Despite pre-match distractions surrounding Osimhen’s reported disagreement with teammates and bonus payment issues, the Super Eagles produced a composed and dominant display, with both goals coming in the second half through the Napoli striker’s brilliance.
Nigeria controlled the opening half, enjoying far more possession and creating several clear chances. Semi Ajayi and Osimhen both headed off target early on, while efforts from Frank Onyeka and Ademola Lookman tested the Algerian defence. Calvin Bassey came agonisingly close when his back-post effort was cleared off the line, and Ademola Lookman later missed a gilt-edged opportunity just before the break.
The breakthrough arrived two minutes after halftime when Osimhen rose highest to power home a header, marking his fourth goal of the tournament and 35th international strike. Just 11 minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, racing onto an Alex Iwobi through ball before selflessly squaring for Lookman, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net.
Nigeria comfortably managed the remainder of the match, securing back-to-back clean sheets and advancing to their 16th AFCON semi-final. The Super Eagles will now face host nation Morocco with a place in the final at stake.
