Osimhen edges closer to history in top scorer award chase
By the time Serie A 2022/2023 season comes to an end next week, Victor Osimhen will be hoping to make a new history by becoming the first African to win the top scorer award in the league.
Osimhen netted a brace on Sunday in their 2-2 draw with Bologna to take his goal tally to 25 for the season, four more than his closest challenger, Argentine Lautaro Martínez of Inter Milan who has 21 goals to his name.
With a lone game to go, the Nigerian striker could make history and become the first-ever African to win the ‘Capocannoniere’.
No African has historically won the serie A top scorer award, even Ballon D’or winner Goerge Weah and Samuel Eto’o who one time or the other had stints in the Italian league.
Osimhen has already surpassed George Weah’s record for the African with the most serie A goals with 49 goals, and also eclipsed Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o ( 21) for the most goal scored by an African in a single Serie A season.
The last Serie A game of the season will come up on June 4th 2023 as champions Napoli welcome Sampdoria, while Inter Milan will be away to Torino
