Ondo Assembly deputy speaker, majority leader resign
In a significant political shift, the Ondo State House of Assembly witnessed the resignation of both Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Abayomi Akinruntan and Majority Leader Emmanuel Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi.
Akinruntan, whose father is the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Frederick Obateru Akinruntan, stepped down from his role, paving the way for Hon. Ololade Gbegudu from Okitipupa Local Government to take over as Deputy Speaker.
In his resignation letter, Akinruntan expressed appreciation to the Assembly members for their support during his tenure but did not reveal specific reasons for his departure.
Speculation surrounding Akinruntan’s resignation suggests it may be linked to local political dynamics, particularly involving Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Both the Governor and Akinruntan represent the same local government area, and sources indicate a longstanding tension between the Governor and the Deputy Speaker’s father.
Gbegudu, a two-term lawmaker with a background as Chairman of the House Committee on Security Matters and Community Development, received nomination support from Oluwatoyin James and Chris Aiyebusiwa.
In a related restructuring, Majority Leader Ogunmolasuyi has traded his position with Olatunji Oshati from Ose State Constituency, further altering the leadership landscape of the Assembly.
