Omar Gambari officially declares for Kwara 2027 guber race
Omar Bolaji Gambari has officially declared his intention to contest the governorship of Kwara State in the upcoming general elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The 52-year-old Ilorin-born international corporate governance and legal expert made the declaration on Monday at a press briefing in Ilorin.
Gambari stated that his agenda is anchored on “5Ps,” which he translates as Peoples’ Protection, Prosperity, Politics, and Partnership.

He noted that his decision to join the race is driven by a desire to accelerate development in Kwara State, while also protecting the lives and properties of its citizens.
OBG, as he is fondly called, is the son of Professor Ibrahim Gambari, a highly respected former Nigerian Minister of External Affairs and former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
“I am here to declare my intention to contest for the nomination for governorship under our great party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and under the leadership of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki,” he said.
Gambari, a former aspirant for the House of Representatives in the Ilorin East and South Federal Constituency, noted that he possesses the leadership qualities and experience to manage the affairs of Kwara State.
“I am not new to the political space in Kwara. I aspired for a House of Representatives seat in 2018 under the PDP. Since then, I have gained more knowledge, exposure, and experience to lead Kwara State,” he explained.
He further stated that if elected, his administration would prioritize security, an agricultural revolution, healthcare, youth empowerment, among other development initiatives.
Gambari also promised to establish Kwara North and Kwara South Development Commissions to address infrastructural deficits and the perceived marginalization of the two regions.
Despite internal conflicts at the national level within the PDP, he noted that the party remains strong in Kwara State and will field candidates in the next elections.
“PDP is strong and thriving in Kwara,” Gambari said, expressing confidence that the party will also win the governorship election.
Gambari joins two other prominent PDP chieftains, Engr. Kale Kawu and Professor Ali Ahmad, who have declared their intention to run for governorship under the party.
