The case against the embattled monarch gained public attention after a viral video showed him slapping, threatening, and humiliating an elderly man, Abraham Areola, in public.

The footage also captured one of the monarch’s aides striking the victim and forcing him to kneel on the roadside.

According to court documents (MH2b8c/2025), Ogunjobi faces charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The charge sheet states that on 21st January 2025, at Sojuolu Street, Ifo, Ogunjobi and others assaulted Areola, causing him harm and publicly humiliating him.

The offences are punishable under Sections 517, 351, and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Court proceedings and bail conditions

Appearing before Magistrate F. A. Iroko, Ogunjobi pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He was granted bail set at ₦10 million, with two sureties required to reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

However, he failed to meet the conditions, leading to his remand in Ilaro prison.

The case has been adjourned to 6th March 2025 for further hearing.

Public outrage and calls for justice

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Ogun State has praised the government’s swift action in suspending the monarch and called for his full prosecution.

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) also urged the arrest of Ogunjobi’s aide, who was seen attacking the victim in the video.
